The old A models of the US Air Force KC-135 were powered by water injected engines developed in the early 1950s. These engines were notoriously smokey specially at full power on take-off where the effects of water injection delivered trails of billowing black smoke. This video speaks for itself, extremely impressive!! Although not ideal for the environment.
